77 percent of the County/city in Java water crisis

Coconut VIVAnews -a database of information and public relations agency for disaster relief, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said as many as 77 per cent of kabupaten/kota on Java already experiencing water crises.

The Data is taken on the basis of the study of Bappenas in 2005, where the outside Jabodetabek, one to eight months have had a deficit of water a year. The cause of the water crisis, said Sutopo, due to the large number of population, environmental degradation, and reduced availability of water.

"In 2025, the number of districts/city water deficit will increase until it reaches around 78,4% with deficits ranging from one to twelve months, or a deficit throughout the year," said Sutopo in the description of VIVAnews.com received in Jakarta, Friday September 9, 2011.

Sutopo explains, there are 38 kabupaten/kota will experience a deficit in water or approximately 35 per cent of the highest water deficit. Meanwhile, in 2025 will be, especially for areas of Jabotabek, where 60 percent of the water supply comes from the Jatiluhur reservoir, about 50 percent of the County/city water deficit and is expected to increase to 100 percent.

"These conditions need attention in particular and immediate handling effort needs to be done in the short term," explained Sutopo.

Water supply efforts through rainwater harvesting during the wet season and soil conservation, could be one way that could be done to anticipate the occurrence of water deficit in the coming years. (art)
